ICAR Tool

Synopsis:

The ICAR Tool is an online prototype created to demonstrate the requirements of an Augmented Reality Common Operating Picture for Incident Command Systems. I worked with a team of 5 other user experience designers to research the needs of incident commanders.

Research:

Through our research, we learned that existing pain points in the Incident Command space are the lack of situational awareness as well as a need to track triage status, responder health and deploy additional resources as quickly as possible. Our interviews with incident command workers revealed a wealth of information about the tools they deemed essential to their work routine. A few examples of these functions include as 3D interfaces, effortless collaboration between different divisions of first responders and easy resource management.

Our findings culminated into our prototype the Incidence Command Augmented Reality Tool or ICAR tool!

Solution:

The ICAR Tool is a prototype which demonstrates the essential abilities of a future Augmented Reality tool and as well as exploring what such a tool may look like. It allows incident commanders to track their responders in large area and navigate quickly between them. Commanders can tap into the camera feed of their units and view their basic metrics without having to ask for updates from their responders. Using the organizational menus on the left side of the screen, the commander can also view the current status of their units, such as resting, idle, available, and more. Clicking these icons will also bring the commander directly to their units location so they don't have to search the area for them in a large incident.

My Contribution:

I designed the majority of the UX and UI for the ICAR Prototype which was implemented by a UX Developer on my team. They created and coded the final prototype see linked above. I also was responsible for the document layouts found by clicking gone the ICAR logo in the prototype and wrote and edited a large portion of each of our report documents. In addition to this, I created the project personas and designed the persona documents.
